School Based

School BasedUsing evidence-based methods proven to be extremely successful nationally, Horizon's school based services take a comprehensive, holistic and integrated approach to severe behavioral issues for children in and out of the school setting.

Horizon's Therapeutic Day Treatment (TDT) Program was developed for children and teens who are seriously emotionally disturbed and who are unable to manage their behaviors. Children who are at risk for removal from the traditional school setting may receive:

  • Behavioral Support
  • Case Management
  • Therapy
If, with support, a student is still unable to manage behaviors or is unable to receive these services due to suspension or other disciplinary measures, the classrooms at Horizon's Therapeutic Day Treatment Center provide a small, intense, therapeutic setting. These students are typically considered "homebound" and can be placed at Horizon for more than a year.

The services provided during TDT are designed to build on the student's strengths and abilities while reducing their risk factors. This program enables children to be successful in their school and community and has proven to keep children out of residential treatment centers and programs. The goal is to create a happier, healthier child.

Horizon's Therapeutic Day Treatment Program is one of the largest school based mental health programs in the Commonwealth of Virginia and serves Amherst, Bedford and Campbell County Schools.

Criteria for Admission: In order to qualify for this program your child must be at risk of being suspended or expelled from school, qualify for funding to cover the program and must attend a school in which Horizon provides services.
