Dear Esteemed Community Partners,

Recent suicides of high-profile celebrities lead us in the behavioral health field to be concerned that young people may copy the act of taking their own lives. The sensationalism can make suicide seem attractive so let’s keep talking about this because it’s our best defense against losing another valuable life. Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among 15- to 29-year-olds around the world, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), and has more than doubled in the past decade.

We often wonder why people that have so much take their lives. In simple terms, depression can be as basic as feeling sad or anxious that most people rebound from but there’s also clinical depression that’s a psychological illness and the basic effect from this illness is that it, "lies to you". In other words, a voice inside your head tells you, you are not good enough, you’re terrible, your family is better off without you. It’s like having someone in your life that abuses you but it’s yourself. So people with clinical depression struggle daily to not pay attention to that voice. We must raise awareness for people to get the help they need so they understand that this voice is not true and they can get past that voice in their head. Too often we neglect to act on our gut feeling that this neighbor, friend, veteran, or family member needs help. When you feel that someone in your life is struggling, act on that feeling. Don’t be afraid of their reaction because one day they may thank you for it.

If you’re experiencing a behavioral health issue call Horizon for more information at 434-477-5000, emergency after-hour number is 434-522-8191 or visit us at

With every best wish and kind regard,
