Horizon Behavioral Health (Horizon) is grateful to the Senate for approving legislation to address our nation’s addiction crisis. This landmark legislation now goes to President Obama for his signature.
Horizon applauds Congress’ achievement, the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act authorizes federal grants for services that help communities combat the opioid and addiction epidemic with prevention, treatment and recovery services. In addition, the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act incentivizes Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs to help identify illegal activity and intervene for those in need of addiction treatment by tracking opioid prescriptions. This legislation will also promote greater collaboration between behavioral health providers, criminal justice, law enforcement, public agencies, and other stakeholders.
This is a historic moment, it’s the first time in almost 40 years that Congress has passed comprehensive addiction legislation and the first time Congress has ever supported long-term addiction recovery. Horizon thanks Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI5) for introducing this bill and Congress for bringing this bill to passage and recognizing the problem. We need to continue moving in the direction of treating addiction not like a crime, but like the public health issue it is.
With every best wish and kind regard,
