A Long Recovery Road

By James Wolk, Peer Support Specialist

I believe that I was born an alcoholic and an addict!

I know that there’s a lot of controversy around this area but I can only speak from my own personal experience. I took my first drink when I was 8yrs old and I loved it right away and took every childhood opportunity that I could get away with to drink more. I began to sniff glue on a regular basis when I was 11. I began to shoot heroin when I was 14 and a year later I began to experiment with a myriad of drugs in an attempt to tune in, turn on and drop out, of what I have no clue, it seemed innate.

By the time that I was 18 years old I had become a full blown alcoholic and started experiencing black-outs, tremors and my first 2 detoxes. Over the years, I managed to accumulate over 100 detoxes 25-30 different long term programs with no result other than an intensive education about alcoholism. I finally did manage to get clean and sober on Jan 5, 1995 after a very powerful and strange spiritual experience in jail. I’m sober and clean 22 years and I thank God every day!
